About Donna Brinton

Donna M. Brinton is a distinguished figure in the field of applied linguistics and TESOL, joining us.

Donna's academic journey is as rich as it is inspiring. With dual BA degrees from UC Berkeley and MA degrees from Purdue University and UCLA, she has been a prominent figure in ESL/EFL education, starting her career in Germany and later contributing significantly at institutions like UCLA, Soka University of America, and USC.

A key aspect of Donna's work is her advocacy for Content-Based Instruction (CBI). This innovative approach uses the new language as the medium of instruction, integrating language and content teaching. This method leverages the interconnectedness of language form and function, offering a more holistic learning experience.

Donna's role in the field extends beyond her academic and teaching contributions. She is part of the first generation of female applied linguists who, in the 1970s, began to significantly shift the gender dynamics in this field. Her generation marked a pivotal moment, paving the way for greater female representation and leadership in applied linguistics.

Her extensive authorship includes influential texts like 'Teaching Pronunciation,' 'The Content-Based Classroom,' and 'Heritage Language Education.' These works, along with her global teaching and consulting experience, have made her a respected voice in language education worldwide.
