Dylan Gates on Dogme and the RDS Method

Grow with other teacherpreneurs in our free support community.

Dylan was born just outside London and has been working in the ELT sector for nearly 25 years. About 12 years ago, he discovered Dogme, or as he prefers to call it “Teaching Unplugged”, and this led to his interest in deep-end learning approaches like TBLT and language coaching. When he trains teachers, he makes sure they learn how to move away from the coursebook and deal with emergent language.

In this episode, he shines a light on:

  • how freelancing led him to Dogme

  • why he includes reactive teaching in his tool kit for the modern teacher

  • the RDS method for dealing with emergent language

  • key considerations for designing materials with a reactive mindset

  • the future of ELT, AI, and how teachers can innovate

About Dylan Gates

Dylan was born just outside London and has been working in the ELT sector for nearly 25 years. Like so many language educators, he enrolled in a TEFL course to fund his travels, but, to his surprise, discovered that he loved teaching English.

He has worked in Ecuador, the UK, and Spain, where he now lives, and has had a variety of roles, including being a Director of Studies, an examiner, an EAP tutor at universities, a business English coach, and a Course Director of a Cert TESOL training program. Along the way, he found the time to do a DELTA and get an MA in TESOL and ELT.

He now works on a freelance basis, doing a bit of everything from business English coaching to teacher training, materials design, and course creation. Like many ELT professionals, he has created a lot of content such as online courses, such as his Master Polite English and Business English Idioms courses. However, he is most proud of his ebook 'A Short Guide to TEFL' mainly because it was number one in its - admittedly very niche - category for one whole day back in 2013. At least, he can call himself a 'bestselling author'!!

He is in the process of creating a website for teachers interested in implementing an unplugged approach and his ebook 'Speaking Unplugged - 30 activities for 1-1 classes - can be found on one of his websites 'DylanGates.com'.

If you want to get in touch, you can find him on LinkedIn where he regularly posts reflective questions about language teaching and learning.
